Returning to Base: How Stress and the Gut Are Connected

Welcome to The Melanin & Microbiome Digest!

Welcome to another edition of The Melanin & Microbiome Digest™ where we center gut health, wellness, and empowerment—especially for Black women.

In our last edition of the Digest we talked about the value of the Cocoon Cleanse. The primary focus of the program is to guide black women thorugh active rest. It's a reset for your gut, your rhythm, and your nervous system.

Before You Push, Pause

It’s only the second day of the new year and already, many of us feel the pressure to do something different.

Eat better. Be more disciplined. Reset everything.

But if your body feels tired, bloated, wired, or emotionally thin right now, that doesn’t mean you’ve failed the new year. It means your body is still recovering from the last one.

Before we talk about resets, it helps to understand one of the most overlooked connections in gut health: the gut–cortisol loop.

Let's get into it!

Gut Health Insight: What Is The Gut-Cortisol Loop?

First, let's make sure we are all on the same page by defining what cortisol is in a very basic sense.

Cortisol is a hormone released by your body when it is under stress or a perceived threat. It prepares the body for either fight or flight. This response is meant to be protective and short-term.

When the body enters this mode, digestion, which is part of the rest and digest system, slows down or temporarily pauses so the body can focus on immediate demands.

A Simple Example

Imagine this.

You have an important work project that is critical to the promotion you have been working toward over the last year. Senior level leadership will be present.

You walk into the meeting space already to go until...you realize you did not bring the handouts!

Immediately you feel your "stomach drop" and you feel a sudden urge to use the restroom. Your body reacts before your mind has time to catch up.

This is an example of cortisol at work.

Cortisol tells your body, “This isn’t the time for digestion.” In response, your gut slows down, pauses, or rushes whatever it was doing. At the same time, you feel more alert and focused.

You quickly regroup. You know this material and you think of a solution to the problem. Your presenation goes well and the moment passes.

The Beginning: The Gut-Cortisol Loop

When your body releases cortisol in response to stress or a perceived threat it is meant to be protective and short-term. Once the stressor passes, cortisol levels lower and your gut returns to its natural state of rest, repair, and digestion.

But what happens when the stress or perceived threat does not dissipate?

That's where the gut-cortisol loop begins.

In a regulated body, stress passes and digestion resumes.

But when stress becomes familiar—quiet, ongoing, and rarely acknowledged—the body doesn’t get the message that it’s safe to return to rest.

Instead, cortisol stays in the system longer. Digestion stays disrupted. And the loop begins.

Once you are in this gut-cortisol loop you may experience:

  • Bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort that shows up or worsens during stressful periods
  • A sudden urge to use the restroom during moments of pressue or anxiety
  • Constipation during high-stress weeks, followed by looser stools when things finally slow down
  • Feeling full quickly or having little appetite when under pressure
  • Digestive discomfort even when eating foods that usually feel "safe"
  • A sense that digestion is unpredictable, fine one day, or off another day

These gut changes aren’t random. They’re often tied to how long the body has been operating under stress.

Why This Matters to Black Women

For many Black women, chronic stress has become so familiar that it almost goes unoticed. The symptoms, especially gut-related ones, begin to feel normal.

The normalization starts early.

Many of us grew up watching mothers, aunts, or other women in our lives manging gut issues while also carrying significant stress. Over time, the connection between stress and digestion becomes something we expect rather than question.

We also see this pattern reinforced culturally in stories that celebrate endurance, self-sacrifice, and strength, often without acknowledging the toll they take on the body.

Many of us learn, consciously or not, to operate as members of what I call The Strong Black Woman League™.

This doesn’t mean Black women are more “stressed” than others. It means our bodies are often adapting to environments and expectations that require sustained vigilance.

Understanding the gut–cortisol loop helps explain why gut issues can persist even when we’re eating well, doing the right things, and trying to take care of ourselves.

Long-term healing and holistic health is dependent on our ability to put down the cape and return to base.

The Breakdown: Supporting the Gut When Stress Has Been Running the Show

When the gut-cortisol loop has been active for a while, the body needs cues for safety. The most helpful solutions are not extreme or restrictive.

Here are a few gentle ways you can disrupt the loop and come out of fight or flight and back into rest, repair, and digest:

This rhythm-first approach is the foundation of Cocoon Cleanse™: A reset for your gut, your rhythm, and your nervous system.

Flavor & Flora: A Calming Gut Ritual

When stress has been running the show, warmth and simplicity matter. A calming herbal tea like chamomile, lemon balm, or ginger can gently support digestion while signaling safety to the nervous system.

Try enjoying your tea seated, without multitasking, as a small daily ritual of return.

Gut-Loving Tip of the Week

This week, don't focus on so much what you eat, but how you eat it. Slow down, be intentional. Don't read email or scroll through your phone as you consume your meal.

Wellness Reflection

Note how you feel after eating your meals in this way. How does your gut feel? Any change in your mood or energy? Try committing to doing this with at least one of your meals each day.

Coming Up Next in the Digest...

As a quick note, there will not be an issue of The Melanin & Microbiome Digest™ released on January 16. During that week, I’ll be fully immersed in the Cocoon Cleanse™, supporting participants as they move through their reset.

Our next issue will arrive on January 30.

In that issue, we’ll begin exploring what often becomes possible after the body starts to feel safer.

Not in a dramatic way—but in subtle, noticeable shifts.

We’ll talk about:

  • How digestion may begin to respond differently when stress is no longer running the show
  • Why “listening to your body” often feels clearer once the nervous system is more regulated
  • What sustainable gut support can look like beyond constant resets, routines, or pushing

This next conversation is about integration; what happens when the body isn’t just surviving, but beginning to settle.
